The Peak of Joy
It is simply enchanting. With the evening light and the sun setting behind the mountains. The lights of Hohenschwangau come to life while the Köllenspitze mountain slowly disappears. Next to us the big campfire is popping and crackling and its smell is blending with the aroma of Kässpatzn and Fondue. Mountain lodge at its best! With our backs in a fur skin and a wheat beer on the table, we are enjoying this wonderful summer evening at Rohrkopfhütte and decide: Tomorrow we will give the new yoga platforms a go!
OFF TO NEW ADVENTURES
But until then there is still plenty of time. Enough for good conversation, more fire and big plans. Somehow this mountain clears your head, brings new energy and renews your spirits. The evenings at Rohrkopfhütte are popular. In winter people come on skis, snowshoes or mini bob – but even then it is not overcrowded, because the vastness of the mountains is simply greater than man. In summer, Rohrkopfhütte is the destination of hikers and mountain bikers, nature lovers, romantics and those who want to immerse themselves in the forest. "Rohrkopfhütte used to be accessible only on foot or by horse", mountain guide Basti explains. "Today we are able to bring up provisions by 4x4 or tracked vehicle". But what has remained is the social cohesion on the mountain: people help each other, like each other and are there for each other.
MOUNTAIN AIR MAKES HUNGRY
Figures show how popular Rohrkopfhütte is with its visitors: From November to February, 3600 litres of beer are flowing into thirsty throats. One season requires 2 tons of potatoes and 30 kilos of beef and vegetables each for the weekly Goulash Soup. "Our favourite place to peel the potatoes is on the terrace in the morning", the staff of the mountain lodge tell us. "The secret to our food is honest craftsmanship. We even roll the Apple Strudel ourselves up here". We'd love to, but after the fantastic Fondue just now, there is simply no space left for the Apple Strudel. A better option now is a Rübezahl Elixir and Toni is the one to ask. He is one of the hard-working employees of Rohrkopfhütte, likes to stick around himself until late in the evening, looks after the fire and the guests love to talk to him.
